What You Need To Do Before You Get An Auto Loan
April 14, 2009
If you are not lucky enough to be able to pay for a car out of pocket then you will probably need an auto loan. So do you just start looking at cars without doing anything to prepare?
You don’t if you want to get the best deal you can on an auto loan. A little preparation can do wonders to improve your approach to the car buying process.
Start With Where You Are Financially
Take an honest look at your finances. What can you afford to spend for a car? What type of monthly payments can you afford? You do not want to get an auto loan that is going to be a financial difficulty for the next few years of your life.
You can start with your general finances. Do you already have a clear and detailed list of your monthly expenses? If not, now is a good time to start writing them down. You want to know exactly how much you are spending and on what so you know how much you have left over for car payments. You will want to start with your income and start subtracting your monthly bills. Then you want to subtract any other expenses for additional bills or entertainment. Take out any luxuries you are not willing to leave behind before you decide how much you can afford.
You will want to include in the cost of your car more than just the monthly payments. With your car, you will have to shell out for gas, registration, car insurance, and any necessary repairs. They will have to come out of your leftover cash too.
Choose A Car
Now that you know what you can afford, you can select a car that fits into your budget. You want to look at what you need before you factor in what you want. If you need to be able to chauffeur kids around town then you need a car big enough to do that. Also, focus on practicalities like gas mileage. This essential feature will pay off big time if you drive on a regular basis.
Then you can move on to the features that you want. You just want to begin with the necessities because they are just that. If you have the funds for more then you can consider getting more.
Shop Around
Shopping around these days so often refers to using the internet because it is such an available and helpful tool. It can give you instantaneous access to the best deals out there on just about anything, and auto loans are no exception. You can enter in your information and come back with a quote in no time, and you can do it without harming your credit score.
You don’t need to limit yourself to the internet. For a complete picture of loans that are being offered, you can also check your local newspapers, credit unions, car dealerships, and banks. You never know which one might be able to offer you a deal.
Be wary when you are offered the opportunity to make a low down payment. This is often an indicator that you will be paying for it down the road. Do not sacrifice low interest rates just to have the chance to start off with a low down payment.
Before you get an auto loan, find out where you stand. A good deal is not worth it if you cannot afford it. Choose a car within your budget and shop around to compare auto loans. You never know who will be able to offer you the deal that best suits you and your wallet.

Got something to say?

Thanks for the tips. My dad is looking to buy a car but we’ve always had pretty bad experiences when it comes to auto lenders. I think we should really do more of that shopping around thing you’ve mentioned so we won’t end up spending more than we intended.
I want to thank you for that bit of info, the first I’m going to do is figure out my monthly home income.
Great to find that the tips are useful. Regarding shopping around, don’t be afraid to play one lender off another too and try to get the interest lowered or even a couple of extra incentives that would help.
