Solar Powered Toyota To Hit The Market
August 9, 2008
The Toyota Motor Corp is working on a new plan to install solar panels on it’s most popular hybrid model; The Prius. The Prius hybrids are in high demand lately due to the concern of high gas prices coupled together with the need to go green.
The Prius hybrid was first introduced to the market in Japan during the late 1990s and then worldwide in 2000. Since this time the response to the gasoline and electric cars have been tremendous and Toyota is having a difficult time keeping up with orders.
Hybrids are seen as eco-friendly and perfect for conserving gas which has become a major concern with gas prices hitting record highs world wide. These cars are expected to grow in popularity during the next year as oil becomes more expensive.
The addition of solar panels on the Prius models will be for show more then anything else. Solar panels are expensive and while they can be used to generate some power for homes, the panels on the Prius is expected only to help keep the vehicle cool during the summer.
“…It would be very difficult to power a whole car, even with technological advances.” Kentaro Endo stated. Kentaro Endo is the director at Japan’s Ministry of Economy.
Generally speaking, hybrids are expensive and the price of the Prius with solar panels are unknown. There was another attempt of a solar powered car in the early 1990s but due to cost and the lack of technology the idea never received a wide range of support from consumers.
The Toyota’s Prius is just one hybrid in a growing market of hybrid cars. Hybrids are known to have a few problems but have also been shown to save gas especially on inner city travelling. Car makers are teaming up with battery manufacturers to create a better hybrid.
