High Gas Prices Not Necessarily a Bad Thing
August 20, 2008
It can be said without a doubt that if there is one thing that defines the economic woes of America at the moment, then it is the rising costs of gas at the pump. More and more citizens are hurting financially due to the excessive strain put on their wallets when having to pay for the expense of traveling in their vehicles, and many are looking to their respective politicians for changes that can help reduce the costs.
What many don’t know is that regardless of what a politician may pitch to drive down the price of gasoline, there really isn’t much that they can do to change costs. They can promise investigations into offshore drilling, tightened standards on corporate petroleum reserves, and many more legal actions, but none can really amount up to more than negligible changes in the long run. The reason for this is because oil prices are dictated by global supply and demand and a dollar that is losing value, two big issues that lawmakers can do very little to influence or change.
On the other hand, individual citizens can make big changes in the way the cost of gas affects their lives by simply changing their habits and making adjustment to the way they live on a daily basis. For instance, instead of owning multiple cars for each family member, families can opt to drive a single car and make trips more worthwhile, reducing their frequency and the amount of gas spent on traveling. Workers can choose to carpool to avoid not only expensive trips to the pump but also the traffic congestion that is a huge problem in most metropolitan areas.
Those are just a few ideas that people can think about when evaluating their financial circumstances in regards to gas prices. There are plenty of other opportunities that can be taken to change lifestyles, and these changes can be seen as a positive thing that is more ecologically conscious and conservative in regards to spending and waste.
