What To Consider Before Buying A New Car
May 26, 2008
It is generally agreed that the two most important financial investments one can make is buying a home and buying a car. Many choose to buy a car first often as young as 16 or 17 since a car grants freedom and let’s face it you can sleep in a car but you can’t drive a house. It is important to know what you want from that new car since going in blind and ignorant can cost you quite a bit of green.
There are many points to consider before you actually step foot on the lot. Buying a car is different from other purchases since that it is considerably more expensive and you can’t just browse around until you find something that strikes your fancy. While many will do just this they are often overcharged and find themselves with a vehicle that does not meet all their needs. You must be prepared.
What you first need to do is determine what exactly you need the car for. Look at your daily life and occupation. Do you need a lot of trunk space? Do you need two doors or four doors? Do you need a car, truck, or SUV? You have to make these decisions before leaving your home. You don’t want to be stuck with a small two door sports car when you have to car pool a bunch of kids to school every couple of times a week.
No matter what, everyone will need a car that gets at least decent gas mileage. This is especially true if you drive a long distance to work, school, or during the weekends.
Sure, this process involves nothing but practical thinking but a car is not some expensive toy. For many a car is the only way to get to and from work and is the life line to cities for those living in rural areas.
You also need to consider all those artistic choices and extras. Will it really kill you if you skip out on getting the leather interior. The benefits of leather are it looks nice and is relatively spill proof. However, if you have a dog or kids those cloth seats may be the way to go.
Color is a surprising deal maker and deal breaker. Don’t go to the dealership wanting one specific color because they just might not have that in stock. Remember, if color really matters, you can always take it to a body shop later to get it painted.
Cars today can come with an array of extras. From DVD players to GPS navigation the extras are pretty much limitless. Realistically, many will just need a working radio maybe even a CD player. But if you really want all those gadgets and gizmos try to find an affordable deal and try not to get too carried away.
Buying a car is a high pressured ordeal where many consumers are just overwhelmed by the sales representative and persuaded into getting something that does not fit their budget or lifestyle. You must keep this in mind as you shop for cars. Once you know exactly what you are looking for you will be able to walk into a dealership with confidence.
