Keeping Checking Accounts in Check

April 23, 2008

If you fail to watch your account’s bottom line, you could end up with overdraft fees, which will put a damper on your holiday spending. In order to make sure you’re not overspending, be sure to write down all your checking account transactions - including debit card payments and account withdrawals. Otherwise, you could easily end up spending more than you have.

Another easy way to keep tabs on your checking account is to conduct a check using an online banking system. That way, you can find out your bank balance and view a list of your transactions with a click of your computer mouse.

Another smart strategy is to plan now for next year’s Christmas spending. Your plan might include enrolling in a Christmas club. These clubs allow you to open a special savings account which allows you to tuck away a little money each month so that you have money to burn by the time the Christmas shopping season rolls around.

Another advantage of Christmas clubs is that they often pay a higher rate of interest than a customary savings account would. In addition, they promote the idea of saving all-year-long - a discipline which can carry over into other aspects of your financial life.
Financial experts also say that shoppers in 2007 should make sure that they establish a budget for Christmas shopping - and that they stick to it. Otherwise, they could end up running up credit card bills that they simply cannot pay - or that they’ll have to pay on for the next few years.

While retailers are hoping for strong sales this holiday season, financial experts say that individual consumers should not feel pressured to overspend. After all, you’re the one who will have to live with the consequences of overspending—not your local department store.
